Description
This blade is forged by and heat treated by Nic Westermann, the grinding is done on our small knife jig. The blade is forged from 1/4″ bearing steel rod- this makes fitting a handle very easy and a round tang and also adds rigidity to a thin blade,
The blade is just over 1mm thick and has a very shallow primary grind ensuring that the blade will penetrate the wood without excessive splitting or wedging occurring. There is a very small secondary bevel of 25 degrees- to ensure the edge will hold.
This blade has been developed with input from well known carvers and chip carvers, it is not common to see a blade with a secondary bevel in green wood working but it is far superior for deeper plunge cuts.
The cranked version has a slightly more angle between the edge and tang and also the tip is a quite robust, this makes it ideal for removing triangular chips, but it will not be as agile in curves, our standard chip carver will be better if this is required, such as deeper cut lettering.
As these blades are forged by hand the final thickness does vary, by approx .25mm, this doesn’t sound like a lot but when put in our Jig it means that whilst the edge geometry is identical the point the grind line blends in with the scale from forging will vary so there may be some cosmetic differences between blades, be assured though- this has no effect on their function.
Legal note : This blade can only be sold to customers over the age of 18, appropriate measures are in place to ensure this.
